Advent 8/25 (skipped 7)

 DAY EIGHT (week two; lineage)

Sundays will be a day to rest, catch up on the advent, and maybe meditate over the things you have read this week. I did skip that post as a reminder, but next Sunday I will upload a little blip saying this. Sorry about that!

Have you ever done a read-through of Genesis, then all of a sudden, you get hit with a whole chapter of names? Not only were there a lot, but they were all so hard to pronounce! Let’s say you skipped over to the Gospels for something a bit easier to read. First chapter of Matthew- bam! More lists of families! What could be so important about putting in all these random men and who their sons are?
Well, it also includes their ages. This can help us determine how old the Earth is, and it can help us line up how far events (like the flood vs creation) were from each other. We can estimate that Earth is around 6,000 years old, meaning that before Jesus, there were about 4,000 years of history. (~4,000BC + 2025AD = ~6,000 years)
Today we will focus on another reason why it was so important to have these lines of families. They lead to Christ.
I will type them out until just Abraham for Monday:
   Adam
   Seth
   Enos
   Cainan
   Mahalaleel
   Jared
   Enoch
Methuselah (oldest -recorded- man at 969 years old!)
   Lamech
   Noah
   Shem
   Arphaxad
   Salah
   Eber
   Peleg
   Reu
   Serug
   Nahor
   Terah
   Abram (later Abraham)
So Adam had Seth, then Seth had Enos, then Enos had Cainan, and so on and so on. I will talk about how this line continues, and the importance of certain men, tomorrow. Today, I encourage you to pray with me for wisdom in our youth, and knowledge in God’s Word. (Which is correlated with the study because of the oldest man- Methuselah!)
